BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS

As a newly election member of the Town Council, I became the Town Council Liaison to the Youth Council Committee. The Committee was formed via Resolution 12-63 to consist of ten (10) members (two appointed by each Council Member) to be appointed by the Town Council and one (1) member to be appointed by the School District.

It is evident that although students wish to participate, due to school, family and home commitments and other reasons, students are not always able to attend monthly meetings. With such a large number of appointed members, it is difficult to obtain a quorum of members present at a meeting in order to conduct business.

Each year, several of the members graduate from high school and new members are appointed to take their place. Since now is when the Town Council would be looking to fill the vacancies and have not yet done so, this is a good opportunity to limit the number of committee members to five (5) appointed by the Town Council rather than ten (10) members appointed by the Town Council. By removing the five graduating senior seats, there are now five (5) remaining members. Mayor Meerbott and Vice Mayor Loyzelle still have two (2) appointees each, while Council Member Coriat and Council Member Duncan have no appointees.
