A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF CUTLER BAY, FLORIDA, DESIGNATING LINCOLN CITY PARK AS A DOG PARK; PROVIDING FOR IMPLEMENTATION; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

body.

BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS

The Town of Cutler Bay (the “Town”) currently has nine (9) parks to serve residents and guests.  During the development of the 2009 Parks Master Plan, residents expressed a need for a dog park.  The Town has not yet identified a feasible location for a dog park.  Dog parks improve the quality of life for dog owners as well as for their dogs.  They promote a healthy lifestyle for people and pets, add to our sense of community, and help to promote responsible dog ownership.  A study by the Miami-Dade Downtown Development Authority found that of the households in Miami-Dade County that report having a pet, 77% of these households own a dog.

Lincoln City Park is a ½ acre park located at SW 212 Street and 99 Avenue.  The park is undeveloped with an abundance of native trees such as live oak and slash pines (Attachment “A”).  The Town Council desires to convert Lincoln City Park into an off-leash dog park in order to accommodate the expressed interest of our residents.  The Town shall preserve the native trees and vegetation at the park to the greatest extent possible

RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Town Council adopt the attached Resolution, designating Lincoln City Park as an off-leash dog park.
