BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS
The Town of Cutler Bay (the “Town”) is committed to protecting the community from sea level rise and related flooding. The Town has been working with local and regional partners to build its resiliency and to develop mitigation strategies to address seal level rise. Sea level rise poses a unique threat to all of Florida, given the limestone bedrock beneath the majority of the state, which allows rising sea water to infiltrate sewage systems and threaten groundwater supplies via salt water intrusion.
The Seawall Coalition (the “Coalition”) is a non-partisan group of elected officials, military groups, businesses, and community leaders that have come together to unlock national solutions to sea level rise and flooding that support costal and riverfront communities and protect our nation’s citizens, economy, and military installations. The Coalition advocates national coordination and solutions to address the challenges of sea level rise and flooding that invest in and protect our coastal communities. The Coalition also serves as a forum to establish best practices for local and state level responses to sea level rise and flooding that will enhance the Town’s sea level rise efforts.
Joining the Coalition will aid the Town’s efforts to protect and adopt strategies to mitigate sea level rise and flooding.
RECOMMENDATION
We recommend that the attached Resolution be adopted, to join the Seawall Coalition.
