BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS
On January 15, 2014 the Town Council approved an Educational Compact Agreement (Attachment “A”) via Resolution No. 14-03, with goals to further develop specific recommendations as outlined in the Educational Compact Agreement with Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Immediately thereafter, Town staff met with principals and teachers of Cutler Bay Senior High School in order to discuss the potential possibilities of a Student Internship Partnership Program within the Town. Similar internship partnerships have been established as a result of the Education Compact Agreement which include the following governmental agencies: Miami-Dade County, City of Miami, City of Miami Gardens, City of North Miami Beach, Village of Pinecrest, City of Miami Beach and City of North Miami. The Miami-Dade County Public Schools Internship Program has been in existence since 1958 and has provided great opportunities for high school students attending Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
On August 20, 2014, the Town Council approved the Internship Cooperative Agreement with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (Attachment “B”) via Resolution No. 14-57, establishing the Town’s inaugural iPrep Executive Internship Program for academic year 2014-15. The program allows students from Cutler Bay Senior High School a “hands on” experience interning in various Town Departments throughout the academic year.
Since 2014, the iPrep Executive Internship Program continues to provide students attending Cutler Bay Senior High School with two (2) hours of actual classroom credits from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM and possibly an additional two (2) hours (3:00 to 5:00 PM) of community service hours which are required for graduation purposes.
The Town’s iPrep Executive Internship Program identifies key career pathways for students and encourages career appropriate internship opportunities within all municipal departments while also providing each student with “real-world” and “hands-on” experience.
RECOMMENDATION
We recommend that the attached Resolution be adopted, authorizing the Town Manager to execute the Student Internship Cooperative Agreement with Miami-Dade County School Board and take all necessary steps to implement the items within the Agreement.
