BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS
Solar photovoltaic energy offers many benefits to the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels, while at the same time lowering electricity costs to homeowners and businesses.
Solar panel installations require two building permits: 1) a solar panel building permit and 2) an electrical sub-permit. The solar panel building permit price is based on the estimated value of the project and the permit fee is approximately $145.00. The electrical sub permit is based on the number of systems and the permit fee is approximately $334.00.
Since 2012, the Town has issued 52 Solar Photovoltaic Building Permits.
In an effort to encourage Town residents and business owners to install solar panel systems in their properties, the Town Council desires to discount permit fees by sixty-five percent (65%), which is the amount retained by the Town pursuant to its agreement with C.A.P. Government, Inc.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the Town Council adopt the attached Resolution, discounting solar panel permit fees.
