BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS
The Town of Cutler Bay has been a strong advocate for the expansion of mass transit to the South Dade Region for several years. In April 2015, the Town adopted Resolution #15-26 urging the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (formerly the Metropolitan Planning Organization) to undertake a new transit study for the purpose of determining the need and plans for future expansion of mass transit along the South Dade Busway (now known as the South Dade Transitway).
This push to improve transportation options for the residents of South Dade has been a combined effort of the community leaders and elected officials of South Dade. This includes, but is not limited to; Mayor Joseph Corradino - Village of Pinecrest, Mayor Eugene Flinn - Village of Palmetto Bay, Mayor Jeff Porter - City of Homestead, Mayor Otis T. Wallace - City of Florida City, Miami-Dade Commissioner Danielle Levine-Cava (District 8), Miami-Dade Commissioner Dennis C. Moss (District 9), Miami-Dade Commissioner Xavier L. Suarez (District 7), Congressman Carlos Curbelo and State Representative Kionne L. McGhee.
Recently, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez expressed a shift in position related to expanding mass transit to South Dade. He has concluded that the best alternative at this time to relieve congestion is to expand bus rapid transit in the shorter term, followed by autonomous vehicle technology in the future. In...
