BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS

In order to maintain the existing level of responsiveness and service, during a storm/flooding event within our Police Department, there is a need to purchase two (2) police Sport Utility Vehicles ("SUVs"). The proposed SUVs will be striped and equipped with all the standard emergency response equipment. Additionally, the Miami-Dade Police Department will install additional equipment which will allow each of the vehicles to serve as individual mobile Command Centers, during an emergency event. The vehicles will be operated on a daily basis, by police personnel during routine patrols, and will be highly visible throughout our community.

The SUVs offers many advantages over the traditional police cruiser (Ford Crown Victoria). A growing number of police agencies across the U.S. are opting to buy sport utility vehicles over police cruisers, to provide officers additional space and fuel savings. The traditional police cruiser managed 14 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway, whereas the Ford SUV proposed achieves 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. Also, it has been proven that the engine in the SUV uses 32 percent less fuel than the police cruiser when in idle.
