A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF CUTLER BAY, FLORIDA URGING THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND PUBLIC WORKS TO CONDUCT A TRAFFIC STUDY OF THE CORRIDOR THAT CONSISTS OF S.W. 87th AVENUE BETWEEN S.W. 184th STREET AND S.W. 244th STREET EVALUATING THE SPEED LIMIT WITHIN THE AFOREMENTIONED CORRIDOR; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS
In an effort to further protect the safety of bicyclists, pedestrians and wildlife; the Town is requesting the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works to conduct a Traffic Study along the SW 87th Avenue Corridor (from SW 184th St to SW 244th St). The goal of the study is to determine the need and feasibility of reducing the posted speed limit along the corridor to 30 MPH; with the exception of the Old Cutler Road traffic circle which shall remain at 15 MPH. The proposed 30 MPH speed limit is consistent of other residential neighborhoods located within the Town.
This segment of road along SW 87th Avenue owned and maintained by Miami-Dade County. Although, SW 87th Avenue is a major roadway within the Town, it consists of single and multifamily homes, parks, mixed use non-motorized trails, share the road bike lanes, and two (2) public schools. Additionally, South of SW 224th Street along SW 87th Ave, there are several hundred acres of protected lands owned by South Florida Water Management District which are inhabited by native and migratory birds and protected wildlife.
