BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS

Funding Source:  Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs

Grant Title:  50th Annual Whispering Pines 4th of July Celebration

Amount Awarded:  $3,561

On March 1, 2017, the Town submitted a grant application to the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs (the Department), to support the 50th Annual Whispering Pines 4th of July Celebration.  This is a milestone celebration of one of the Town’s most popular events.  The Department awarded the Town $3,561 to support this year’s event (Attachment “A”).  The event was held on July 4, 2017, and featured a patriotic parade followed by a community festival which included musical entertainment.  For the 50th Celebration, the Town also introduced demonstrations of American Folk Art (fabric weaving and quilting).

Funded by Miami-Dade County, the Community Grants Program is responsive on a quarterly basis to not-for-profit organizations developing small and large-scale community-based cultural (dance, theater, music, visual arts) programs, as well as projects and events, such as fairs, parades, neighborhood festivals, conferences and publications that have a strong artistic component.

RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Town Council approve the attached Resolution.
