The Florida Department of Transportation (“FDOT”), through a grant with the University of South Florida (“University”), seeks to utilize law enforcement support to educate and enforce safe pedestrian, bicyclist, and driver behaviors in priority counties in Florida. The main objective of this effort is to reduce traffic crashes resulting in pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities and serious injuries through the use of selected traffic education and enforcement operations.

On December 21, 2016, the Town submitted an application requesting funding on behalf of the Cutler Bay Policing Unit to join the “Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Enforcement Campaign”.  On December 27, 2016, the Town received notice that the Policing Unit has been approved for a grant of up to $9,736.80.

Funding will be used to pay for overtime hours for officers to complete 20 additional details on the following intersections/corridors:

1.                     SW 87 Avenue and Old Cutler Road

2.                     US1 and SW 192 Street (Marlin Road)

4.                     Caribbean Blvd. and SW 107 Avenue

5.                     SW 87 Avenue and SW 216 Street

The goal of the project is to increase awareness of and compliance with traffic laws pertaining to pedestrian and bicyclist safety in an effort to reduce pedestrian and bicycle crashes, fatalities, and serious injuries the Town’s roadways.  Officers will conduct on-street education and enforcement operations including the distribution of educational materials, and the issuance of warning and/or citations to pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists in accordance with Florida Statutes following an education-warning-citation progression; with emphasis on education.
