BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS

Funding Source:  US Department of Justice

Grant Title:  FY15 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG)

Program: Local

Amount Awarded:  $10,345                       Match Required:  $0

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program (42 U.S.C. 3751(a)) is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions. The JAG Program provides states and units of local governments with critical funding necessary to support a range of program areas including law enforcement, prosecution and court programs, prevention and education programs, corrections and community corrections, drug treatment and enforcement, crime victim and witness initiatives, and planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs.

On June 30, 2015, the Town submitted a grant application requesting funding on behalf of the Cutler Bay Policing Unit.  The Town received notification of award in the amount of $10,345 on August 18, 2015 (Attachment “A”: Award Letter and Grant Application).  The objective of the Town’s grant proposal is to reduce instances of burglary and theft through the enhancement of the Unit’s Burglary Suppression Program.  The objective of the Town’s grant proposal is to reduce instances of burglary and theft by providing local residents and business owners with free on-site Home/Business Security Survey.  This survey will provide residents with a list of suggested safety improvements for their property that will deter crime.  This project implements and enhances the Town’s approved strategic goal to “distribute information cards indicting safety tips and suggest ways to make the resident’s home and/or business safer”.

RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Town Council grants the Town Manager permission to enter into an agreement with the US Department of Justice for the purpose of drawing down $10,345 in grant funding to enhance services provided by the Cutler Bay Policing Unit.
