BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS
Finding good traffic solutions has become vitally important, as our town has grown by 40% and many new residents continue to move into South Dade daily. In 2002 when the voters approved the half penny sales tax the public believed Metro Rail would continue to Florida City and other areas. Unfortunately the cost for heavy rail service became prohibitive and instead South Dade received the bus lane. Bus service has become woefully inadequate, we've outgrown it. It can take 2 1/2 hours, each way, to travel by bus to downtown Miami, where many commuters work.
State Representative Kionne McGhee has drafted a feasible plan that addresses the cost for light rail in South Dade and other similar options in the North, West and East corridors of the County. Mayors from Florida City, Homestead, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and South Miami have called for light rail in South Dade to address traffic congestion and the environmental issues associated with automobile emissions. Representative McGhee has spoken to many stakeholders in drafting a plan that would provide service to each quadrant of the County and has identified the funding for it.
Nothing is more important to our residents than finding solutions to the commuting night...
