Re: Urging Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners to Restore Full Funding to the entire Miami-Dade Library System
REQUESTtitle
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF CUTLER BAY, FLORIDA, URGING THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS TO RESTORE FULL FUNDING TO THE ENTIRE MIAMI-DADE LIBRARY SYSTEM; PROVIDING FOR TRANSMITTAL; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
body
BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS
The Miami-Dade Public Library System is comprised of forty-nine branches which services over 2.5 million residents as well as approximately 8 million visitors throughout Miami-Dade County. With the reduction of funding to the Public Library System and the closures, down-sizing or reconfigurations of the Public Library System many children, teens and adults within all the Miami-Dade County municipalities have been turned away from a place of learning and have thus suffered greatly.
A healthy public library system promotes literacy and cultural appreciation, fosters a more knowledgeable, and educated society. South Dade Regional Library is located in close proximity to the Town of Cutler Bay and serves all of our residents.
RECOMMENDATION
A recent survey by the Task Force has shown that a significant number of Miami-Dade County residents support the library system and are willing to pay to maintain a better level of service in the Public Library System. It is recommended that the Town Council of the Town of Cutler Bay supports a sustainable financial plan with the restoration of full funding for the Public Library System and finds that it is in the best interest of all the residents located in the thirty-four municipalities throughout Miami-Dade County.
